What is SMS?

SMS is a by-product of compost which is composed of various other agricultural by-products.  Items in the mixture consist of:

Wheat Straw

Straw Bedded Horse Manure

Hay (orchard and timothy)

Poultry Manure

Cotton Seed Hulls

Cotton Seed Meal

Cocoa Shells

Gypsum

These organic materials are composted in a specific formulation.  These elements are mixed together and composted in long piles that are called ricks.  This produces a dark brown, soft, fibrous organic growing media.  When the process is complete, the compost is filled into a mushroom growing room where the environment is controlled for proper growth.  After the mushrooms are finished growing, the “spent” compost is steamed and pasteurized and is removed from the growing room.

At Hy-Tech Mushroom Compost, Inc., we inspect all of our organic products that are used for the formulation of our mushroom compost.  We grow our own mushroom crops from this compost.  Therefore, we know the consistency of our Spent Mushroom Substrate that we provide our customers.
